1Our History

Established in 1991, PDM is a private family-owned company based in Shropshire. We are delighted to be recognised as an innovative and dynamic organisation and one that has achieved rapid growth and an enviable market position in our sector. We are however, first and foremost farmers and growers.

Born and bred in Shropshire, PDM’s owner and MD Philip Maddocks is immensely proud of his farming heritage. His genuine love of the land and desire to grow the very best quality produce guides and informs everything we do at PDM. We genuinely enjoy and are truly passionate about being one of the UK’s leading specialist lettuce and baby leaf growers and processors, and we aim to reflect that passion in the way we do business with customers, suppliers and colleagues alike.

2Our Team

We are rightly proud of our stable management team, who have steered PDM through non-stop growth and achievement founded on product development, technical innovation and investment.

Our management structure is such that we can respond quickly and flexibly to rapidly changing market conditions and customer demands. Our technical, administrative and field teams are fully immersed in the PDM culture where product safety and customer service comes first and quality is paramount.

3Where We Grow

Our wide range of quality lettuce and baby leaf produce is grown in the perfect sandy, loamy soils of Shropshire on our 2,500 acre family farm in the heart of England. This traditional agricultural area, where Philip’s family has farmed for generations, is renowned for the reliability of its crop yields.

We’re located just 15 minutes drive away from the main M6 arterial route that links the north and south of the country and which serves all the main link roads into the UK’s leading food retailers’ central distribution depots.

As specialist lettuce and baby leaf growers we understand the demand from consumers for fresh whole head lettuce and tender leaves packed with flavour to be available all year round. All our lettuce and salad leaves are grown here on our Shropshire farm during the traditional British growing season. During the UK winter months we supply from our trusted partners in Continental Europe. We have developed successful long-term relationships with growers in southern Spain, Italy and Portugal.

4Farming & Process

As you would expect of a grower of our size and scale, a culture of excellence and best and better practice is embedded across every aspect of the PDM business. Our robust and rigorous food safety and hygiene management systems span the entire planting to packing process, under the guidance of our Head of Technical.

Our dedicated New Product Development team and technical colleagues work closely with seed breeders worldwide to constantly trial new ideas to deliver improvements in yields, quality, taste, flavours, bite and crunch. Constant innovation is our watchword at PDM.

5Our Customers

Major investment in our new state-of-the-art High Care Unit and associated field and factory technology means we can now provide a rapid pick to plate service that meets the demand from today’s consumers for ready-to-eat washed salads. Our tender young baby leaves deliver the delicious flavours and freshness that salad lovers adore. This commitment to taste and innovation is why PDM proudly supplies many of Britain’s leading retailers, processing and food service companies, fresh food wholesalers and specialist outlets.

Working For Us

Life at PDM

Apart from the quality of our lettuce and salad leaves, one of the things of which we are most proud at PDM is the high number of colleagues in our seasonal planting and harvesting crews who recommend us as a great place to work to family and friends also seeking seasonal farm work in the UK.

We provide good quality living quarters, daily transport runs into our closest town on our dedicated mini-bus and organise a range of regular social events and activities for our valued field and factory colleagues.

One of the highlights of the PDM summer season is the legendary bar-b-que, where our management team put on their aprons and cooks up a feast whilst everyone else parties!
